In the 1860's on the eve of the Civil War slavery was a critical issue at the Bethlehem Church. Taylors Island residents were divided over the issue of slavery. It partially accounts for the reason there were two Methodist Churches on the Island as the Bethlehem Church congregation decided to cast its lot with the Methodist Episcopal Church South.
