This James Island School class photo was provided by Bonnie Parker. It is circa 1908 and in it is her grandmother, Daisy Elizabeth Dean, who was the teacher at the school (She is in the middle of the back row). Daisy was born on July 4, 1888, on James Island. She was one of 8 children & grew up on James Island. She left James Island and teaching to marry Allen L. Parker, Sr., of Hoopers Island in May of 1916 (At that time in history teachers were not allowed to be married). Daisy gave birth to Bonnie's father, Allen L. Parker, Jr., on February 29, 1920 (It was a Leap Year). Both Daisy & Allen, Sr. contracted influenza during the epidemic that killed 50 million people world-wide. Allen Sr. died the day before Allen Jr. was born. Then Daisy died the day after giving birth prematurely to Allen Jr., making Allen Jr. an orphan. Allen Sr. was only 27 & Daisy was 31. Allen Sr’s. brother, Emory E. Parker & his wife Eva E. Flowers Parker adopted Allen Jr. He was not expected to survive because of his low birth weight, but Eva lovingly & diligently nursed him back to health. Sadly Allen Jr. died of a heart attack at the age of 49. Allen Sr. & Daisy Parker are buried at Hosier Memorial Church on Hoopers Island.
