Erosion has had a profound impact on Taylors Island. One such example is the diminution of the area known as the Hooper Point, a/k/a Hoopers Point, which is located where Slaughter Creek meets the Little Choptank River. The land on which the Hooper Point Cemetery existed has eroded into the Little Choptank River and is now under water. Most of the grave stones were moved to the Bethlehem graveyard. The area of the location of the cemetery is depicted in the bottom image (a portion of an old map from 1877).
Luckily, for posterity there is a historical record of the cemetery as well as the specific recollections of John "Pat" Neild, Jr. Pat was born in 1930 and grew up on the island. He recalls that in the late 1940s and 1950s, farming was still going on on the Hoopers Point property around where the cemetery was located. He recollects that much prior to that, a house site was also there on the river side of the point. He further recalls that years ago, on very low tide, an artesian well pipe could be seen sticking up out of the water off-shore to the north. Since that time, the cemetery and most of that land has eroded into the Little Choptank River.
