Below are some additional historic structures on or near Taylors Island (scroll down for photos and written descriptions). These structures are on private property. This information was obtained from the Dorchester - Maryland Inventory of HistoricProperties (https://mht.maryland.gov/mihp/MIHP.aspx?Search=County&County=Dorchester). Some of the structures no longer exist, nor does the Nield Tree.
Bay Shore Road House
In March 2020 Pat Neild (age 90 at the time) reported a conversation with Luther Cornish (age 91 at the time) about this house. The house is located at the 2nd intersection of Hoopers Neck Road and Bayshore Road after coming on the island. Mr. Cornish recollected that the house belonged to John Travers, an African-American man who lived in the wooded area further north on Hoopers Neck Road on the right hand side after the sharp turn. Pat Neild owns that area, and believes he knows where the house site was probably located. The house was likely moved to the current location in the early or mid-1900s. According to the 1860 census John Travers, a laborer aged 31, lived on Taylors Island. He would have been about 70 years old in 1900. Also listed next to his name is Mary age 20 and Alexander age 6 months. There is no proof that this is the same John Travers, but it could be.
